Did you know November is National Scholarship Month? Established in 1998 by Scholarship America (formerly Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of America), National Scholarship Month gives recognition to scholarship providers and encourages others to improve educational opportunities and achievements around the world.
With the average undergraduate accumulating more than $30,000 in student loan debt and college cost increases showing no signs of slowing, scholarships are more vital than ever.
Scholarships not only alleviate debt down the line, but also allow students to focus less on finances and more on their own success while in school.
Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of donors, The San Diego Foundation Community Scholarship Program is the largest private non-university scholarship provider in San Diego County.
Each year, we offer more than $2 million in awards to hundreds of students pursuing their education at community colleges, four-year universities, career/technical schools, teaching credential programs, and graduate, medical or professional schools.
This year we’re offering more than 130 scholarship opportunities, 120 of which will be on our Common Scholarship Application.
The Common Scholarship Application will be available beginning Thursday, December 1, with a deadline to complete applications of February 1, 2017 at 2:00pm.
To help students prepare the best application possible, we have several resources:

As Director of Community Scholarships, Danielle and her team make higher education dreams a reality for hundreds of San Diego students each year. She serves donors who seek to support the educational aspirations of students and families who apply for scholarships each year. Danielle works closely with applicants to match their needs with funding opportunities, and taps the talents of the many volunteers who support the scholarship program.
On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
