May 8, 2014 – San Diego, CA – The San Diego Foundation 2014 giveBIG event was a huge success for the San Diego community, raising an impressive $1,121,882 in just 24 hours through 5,942 gifts that will benefit 353 local charities.

The online giving event held on May 6, 2014 generated $921,782 in donations from the public, while The San Diego Foundation and its generous sponsors ‐ U.S. Bank, Barney & Barney Foundation, Waitt Foundation, AT&T, and Mission Healthcare ‐ contributed an additional $200,000, for a grand total of $1,121,882.

Adrienne Vargas, Chief Giving Officer of The San Diego Foundation, said “We have always known that San Diegans are generous. When we asked them to support this great cause, they certainly answered.”

The San Diego Foundation giveBIG event occurred on May 6, 2014 in conjunction with Give Local America, a national day‐of‐giving in which 83 community foundations across the nation participated. Generating more than $50 million from 231,000+ gifts, Give Local America set the record as the largest giving day in U.S. history, supporting more than 7,700 nonprofits across the nation.

In San Diego during The Foundation’s giveBIG event, High Tech High garnered the most gifts at 295, and the highest amount of donations at $43,810.

Alondra Gomez, Founder & President of Animal Rescuers Without Borders (ARWOB), said, “We couldn’t stop watching the leaderboard throughout the day; we were so pleased to see that we held strong at the top and are both humbled and thrilled by the support we have received from the community. We exceeded our goal by almost $2,000 which will fund services for so many animals.”

During the event, approximately 25 percent of all donors were new to their respective organizations. Additionally, an average 247 gifts were made each hour. Local nonprofits reached out to supporters and potential donors using social media and online giving tools. Facebook and Twitter were ablaze with excitement about the online day-of‐ giving event, and #giveBIG never stopped trending throughout the day.

The ultimate reach of giveBIG extended beyond San Diego, undoubtedly due to the rapid reach that social media spurred. Donors came from 46 states as well as Washington DC, American Samoa, Armed Forces Pacific and Puerto Rico and 12 countries outside the United States, including: Great Britain, Australia, Israel, Germany, Denmark, France, Norway, Turkey and Belgium.
