#GivingTuesday is no longer a global day of giving. It’s a global movement.
The sixth annual #GivingTuesday broke online charitable donation records November 28, resulting in $274 million in donations from more than 150 countries worldwide. That’s a 54 percent increase from 2016 and a 134 percent increase from 2015.
Held annually on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday represents an opportunity for charitable individuals, families and companies to come together on one day to support nonprofit organizations strengthening our community. The 2017 movement proved once again that social media and socially-minded San Diegans can unite to create positive change.
#GivingTuesday 2017 broke online donations records.
The San Diego Foundation joined the movement this year by encouraging San Diegans to support their favorite nonprofit endowment funds at The Foundation. Endowment funds support nonprofit programs and services now and into the future.
“This #GivingTuesday campaign was really special because although it’s just one day of giving now, the impact will support generations moving forward,” said Candace Wo, Nonprofit Funds Manager at The Foundation. “These donations are permanent investments that will generate a lasting impact in the region.”
Nonprofit funds at The Foundation range across a broad spectrum of social impact areas, from arts and culture, to education, to science and technology and more.
Visionary nonprofits open endowment funds at The Foundation to build enduring assets and a stable revenue stream to ensure long-term sustainability and support for our community in perpetuity.

On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
