How has your quality of life improved over the past year? What about within your community?
An excellent way to find out is by connecting to the latest San Diego Regional Quality of Life Dashboard. The interactive, online report-card from the Equinox Project at the Center for Sustainable Energy makes it easy to track the progress and trends in 15 quality of life indicators throughout San Diego County.
“The Equinox Project’s research is used to drive smart, sustainable policymaking and to empower the public to create a better quality of life for current and future generations,” explains Mikaela Bolling, Manager of the Equinox Project.
This year’s report found improvements in eight quality of life indicators, including progress on climate action and employment, among others.
Since last year, the number of cities in San Diego County that adopted, updated or are developing climate action plans grew from 15 jurisdictions to 18 jurisdictions.
“It’s almost unanimous, 18 of the 19 local governments in San Diego County have adopted or are developing a Climate Action Plan,” shared Nicola Hedge, Director of Environment Initiatives at The San Diego Foundation. “We have been working to advance such plans since launching our Climate Program and we are happy to see the efforts of so many leaders and partners come to fruition.”

While more work is still to be done to address the impacts of a changing climate, the positive rating in the Quality of Life Dashboard demonstrates how the entire region is progressing toward a more resilient San Diego.
Unemployment in the region continued to drop, partly thanks to the focus on internships and career opportunities for younger individuals.
In California, as outlined in Quality of Life Dashboard, individuals 16 to 24 years old had a 15.8 percent unemployment rate in 2015, driving the statewide unemployment rate up. In San Diego, every sector is working together to invest in the next generation of leaders and create a robust pipeline of professionals to meet the demands of our growing economy.
At The San Diego Foundation, for example, donors and partners are supporting programs that enable more students, particularly from underserved communities, to pursue careers in STEM and contribute to the regional innovation economy for decades to come.

The Quality of Life Dashboard helps inform the decisions that drive our region forward. Just as much as we celebrate our successes, we also work to improve upon the areas that aren’t growing as quickly.
As Rafael Castellanos, Chairman of the Port of San Diego explained, “Quality of life in our region is really a team effort and all of us have a role to play.”
The San Diego Foundation is working with public officials, nonprofit organizations and businesses to advance quality of life for all San Diegans.

On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
