San Diegans are no strangers to giving back.
According to a 2014 University of San Diego Caster Center research report, 49 percent of San Diego households give money to local nonprofits, and more than one-third volunteer with a nonprofit organization.
For proof of this charitable spirit, look no further than The San Diego Foundation 2015 Annual Report.
40 years ago, a group of eight like-minded San Diegans came together to establish an organization that could help address current and new challenges in the region. Since then, thousands of local donors have given their time, talent and treasure to improve the quality of life for every generation of resident.
From business leaders and nonprofit organizations, to government officials and philanthropists, The San Diego Foundation serves as a partner and catalyst for collective impact.
With your support, we’re proud to address the needs of this region and help improve the quality of life for everyone.
From July 2014 to June 2015 (Fiscal Year 2015), we granted more than $38 million to San Diego organizations and programs serving our communities.
In 2015, most grants benefitted San Diegans and our local nonprofit organizations that serve our regional community from Oceanside to San Ysidro, La Jolla to Ramona and beyond.
Among those organizations and programs are countless success stories, from arts and culture, to climate change and youth development. Read about them in our Annual Report.
Our impact is only as great as those within our network. As we look at how many philanthropists give through The San Diego Foundation, it’s only natural to be encouraged for the future of San Diego.
Of the $48 million granted in FY2015, more than $38 million came from donor advised funds. That is a result of a strong giving community that wants to see San Diego thrive.
The San Diego Foundation has 1,908 charitable funds, including 108 funds opened in FY2015, designated for grantmaking and creating opportunities to be WELL – Work, Enjoy, Live & Learn – for all San Diegans.
With your support, we’re building a movement for positive change and are prepared to meet future uncertainties head on. Together, let’s #FundTheFutureSD and celebrate $1 billion in community giving through grantmaking this year!
On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
