“Russell Reynolds Associates is a highly regarded firm with a well established nonprofit practice,” Connie Matsui, San Diego Foundation board member and Search Coordinating Committee chair shared. “Our Search Firm Committee was very impressed with the firm’s responsive and comprehensive search process, as well as its relevant experience conducting searches for major foundations in California.”
The firm’s scope of work includes development of a position description, which will be informed by a wide-ranging community outreach effort, and a national search to attract a diverse pool of highly qualified candidates. Firm staff members are based in San Diego and San Francisco and have conducted both corporate and nonprofit searches. In total, the Foundation sent requests for proposals to 12 local, regional and national firms.
“The Foundation is committed to an open, fair and professional search process,” Matsui stated. “Through our community outreach efforts, we look forward to hearing what our community most values in the next CEO and the future direction of the Foundation.” The community outreach plan is being developed now in collaboration with the Foundation’s Center for Civic Engagement, key staff and board members. Stakeholder meetings and focus groups commenced in January.
In October, San Diego Foundation President and CEO Bob Kelly announced his planned retirement from the organization in September 2014. The Board of Governors expects to identify a new President and CEO by summer 2014 to ensure a smooth transition. Interested candidates should contact Russell Reynolds Associates at SDFCEO@russellreynolds.com.

On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
