For Immediate Release
July 14, 2021 – San Diego, CA – The San Diego Foundation announced today that $200,000 in grants are available to support local efforts focused on supporting quality of life for older San Diegans.
The Age-Friendly Communities grant is open to San Diego-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations to further assist older San Diegans in low-income and underserved communities throughout the San Diego region. Eligible organizations may request a maximum of $30,000 per proposal to advance and sustain older adult-serving initiatives to address health and socioeconomic disparities, including access to safe transportation options, supportive housing services and affordable healthcare.
The grant application window opens July 12, 2021, and ends at 5 p.m. PST, August 13, 2021.
“We are inspired by community partners who are supporting equity in aging,” said Katie Rast, Director, Community Impact, of The San Diego Foundation. “By advancing efforts to ensure our region is a place where all older adults thrive, we are collectively supporting a vision of a safe and healthy community for all San Diegans.”
According to the California Department of Aging’s Master Plan for Aging, many older adults are economically insecure, struggling to afford costs associated with housing, heath and care. These challenges disproportionately impact low-income communities. As nearly one-third of older Californians are considered poor or near poor, services that support older adults are critical.

On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
