For Immediate Release
May 15, 2020 – San Diego, CA – The Oceanside Charitable Foundation (OCF), an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, marked its 12th year of giving by awarding $84,500 to seven nonprofits promoting the health and well-being of the Oceanside community.
“The Oceanside Charitable Foundation grants showcase the power of collective giving and a commitment by our members to uplift our community through philanthropy,” explained Vince Alessi, Board Chair of OCF. “By investing in programs that support everyone from our seniors to our children, the Oceanside Charitable Foundation is advancing quality of life for Oceanside residents today, and into the future.”
OCF is supported by local philanthropists and businesses dedicated to growing a more vibrant community and meeting emerging needs in Oceanside. Since 2007, members have granted more than $600,000 to nonprofit organizations working in the community to grow a more vibrant region.

The 2020 grantees include:
The grant will support the Bright Futures Transitional Housing Program, which provides survivors of gender-based violence with an opportunity to establish a foundation for the rest of their lives, free from abuse. The program offers families a home while survivors pursue their career and educational goals.
The grant will support the Family Literacy Program, which provides research-based education to parents from underserved communities that will help them support their children’s early learning. The Words Alive program is designed to build a strong family engagement that leads to positive learning routines and improved achievement.
The grant will allow Voices for Children to serve more foster children from the City of Oceanside and deliver important support and advocacy during their time in the foster care system. The support will provide children and families the resources they need to overcome what may be the most challenging chapter of their lives.
The grant will support vital educational, leadership and career preparation programming for youth enrolled in Club Crown Heights after-school programs. The support will help at-risk students succeed in school, apply for college and secure their first job.
The grant will help reduce food insecurity and improve the health of low-income Oceanside seniors. Funding from OCF will allow Serving Seniors to expand its deliveries in Oceanside and offer additional meals at its Oceanside on-site distribution locations.
The grant will support the Culinary Arts Program, which provides freshly prepared meals to young residents in Oceanside, and gives youth hands-on experience with nutritious, healthy cooking. The innovative program blends food security with job training to give youth the skills they need to live long and healthy lives.
The grant will enhance food security for MiraCosta students, many of whom live in extreme poverty and lack access to nutritious meals. Through its food pantry, which serves thousands of students annually, the grant will help ensure that food insecurity is not a barrier to students’ academic success.

On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
