The STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) Leadership Series, sponsored by The San Diego Foundation, Intellectual Capital, Kids Eco Club, the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) and the Education Synergy Alliance, aims to motivate students through a series of lectures from community leaders in the region to think about their dreams, opportunities and future achievements in STEAM-oriented careers.
The lecture series will reach more than 29,000 students in 25 high schools in SDUSD in the coming months.
Each lecture focuses on career opportunities within STEAM fields and connects business leaders to SDUSD students.
Below are clips from the two series kick-off events:
A group of leading engineers in unmanned drones, led by co-founder of 3D Robotics and former Editor-in-Chief of WIRED magazine Chris Anderson, gathered on the USS Midway to inspire San Diego students to consider careers in advanced technology.

Dr. Diego Miralles, Head of Innovation for Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceuticals, inspired students from San Diego’s Kearny High School with his story of leaving a comfortable life in Argentina, sacrificing to get ahead in America, discovering a drug to suppress HIV, and ultimately defining success by the positive influence he and others have on the people around them.

Additional lecture series programs will be produced during the 2015-2016 SDUSD year. Click below to read more from San Diego leaders in STEAM and entrepreneurship.
On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
