Last week, San Diego Foundation (SDF) introduced a new five-year strategic plan to our staff. As we begin sharing it more broadly, we want to start with the idea that shaped this plan, and why it matters for everyone who cares about San Diegoās future.
When families have access to stable housing, children are better positioned to succeed in school. When communities are connected to healthy environments, family well-being improves. When educational opportunities expand, economic opportunity can grow across generations.
And when more people succeed, San Diego is stronger because of it.
Why This Matters Now
Across San Diego County, families are working hard to build lives of stability and opportunity. Yet many continue to face challenges that are increasingly interconnected.
The need for this approach is clear:
- San Diego Countyās housing supply hasnāt kept up with the regionās growth, making it harder for people to find a home.
- More than 4,200 young adults in San Diego County still need a high school diploma, limiting access to higher education and career opportunities.
- Nearly 190,000 children lack access to licensed child care, leaving many parents and caregivers without the support they need to work
- Neighborhoods furthest from opportunity have just 14% of the park space available in our parts of the county, reducing opportunities for children and families to learn, play and connect outdoors.
Challenges of this scale cannot be solved by any one organization. Creating lasting change requires people, organizations, governments and communities working together across issues, not around them.
The Power of Partnership
Every day, we see how donor generosity, paired with trusted community partnerships, creates opportunities that reach far beyond a single program or investment.
Those partnerships are already making a difference in peopleās lives:
- Stanley, 64, found peace and stability through the Access Granted Homebuyer Program, supported by SDF, LISC San Diego and Urban League of San Diego County. Homeownership gave him greater security, control over his future and the opportunity to put down roots.
- Domanick became the first in his family to attend college, supported by educators and mentors at Ocean Discovery Institute and an SDF scholarship. His achievement is opening doors for himself and future generations of his family.
- Drawing on her own experience in foster care and the support she received through Promises2Kids, an SDF grant partner, Laura is navigating motherhood while mentoring foster youth. Her story shows how support at one stage of life can create opportunities at the next.
- Jonathan, an elementary student from Chula Vista, discovered a love for the coast through a partnership between his school district and YMCA of San Diego Countyās Camp Surf, supported by SDF. The hands-on experience deepened his connection to the environment and his role in caring for it.
These stories show what connected problem-solving looks like in practice. Donor generosity, community leadership and trusted partnerships make long-term investments possible, helping communities build lasting opportunity.
Looking Ahead
What more could be possible if we approached our regionās greatest challenges with the same spirit of partnership and shared purpose?
In the weeks ahead, we will share more about the SDF strategic plan and how we will work alongside donors, nonprofit partners and communities throughout San Diego to bring it to life.
Whether you give, volunteer, advocate or collaborate, there is a role for you in realizing a more just, equitable and resilient region. When we invest in one another, we strengthen the future of our entire community.
We invite you to stay connected as we begin this next chapter together.
