One Year In: Coastal’s New Chapter
One year ago, Coastal Community Foundation joined San Diego Foundation (SDF). This was a significant change, and we are grateful for your support, patience and trust.
Your fund is more than charitable dollars. It reflects your values and your commitment to making North County stronger. Together, we’ve already:
- Expanded grantmaking for urgent needs
- Helped donors maximize giving with new tools and services
- Supported innovative nonprofits with flexible funding
Looking ahead, we’ll:
- Create more opportunities for conversations, site visits and learning
- Connect you and your families with our team to develop strategies that maximize tax benefits and grow your impact
- Make giving easier and join others in collective impact
Our Shared Priorities
Coastal and SDF share the same passion for supporting children and families, education and the environment. As part of the SDF Fifty & Forward campaign, we’re:
- Building strong families where every child is healthy and families thrive.
- Growing future leaders by removing barriers from early education through higher education.
- Protecting our climate and environment, ensuring clean air, safe water, parks, and coastlines for generations to come.
Through our aligned giving, we’ve granted more than $335 million of our $500 million grantmaking goal. Learn more about the campaign at SDFoundaton.org/50
Coastal Donor Highlight
We’re excited to share that Susan Steele of Encinitas is Coastal’s 2025 Volunteer of the Year nominee with the North County Philanthropy Council.
More than 16 years ago, Sue co-founded Hand to Hand, a women’s giving circle that empowers members to pool resources, make grants and strengthen local nonprofits.
“What inspires me most is giving others the tools to become impactful philanthropists,” said Susan. “Through site visits and direct engagement, we’ve built lasting connections that deepen our commitment and help North County thrive.”

Meeting Youth Needs in 2025: A Call to Action
The Safe and Stable Housing Youth Fund received nearly $700,000 in requests for urgent housing, mentorship, advocacy and mental health programs. With only $100,000 available, many vital needs go unmet.
“I believe all youth will succeed if given the chance,” Eric Lovett, Founder & CEO of Urban Street Angels.
Top Needs in 2025
- Stable housing (40% of proposals)
- Advocacy & legal support
- Mentorship & wraparound care
- Education & mental health
Together, we can help close the gap. Every gift expands our reach – ensuring youth are supported with shelter, emergency funds and mentors.
