WHAT: | The Gilliam Family Community Space and Garden will host its grand opening and ribbon-cutting on Saturday, November 14. Neighbors, volunteers and stakeholders will participate to signify this great new addition and enhancement to the Greater Logan Heights area.
The 5,037-square-foot space and garden, amphitheater-like seating area, maze and several playing grounds are intended to be gathering areas for the diverse community, and will aid businesses by providing a space for customers to enjoy meals. The lot is owned by Derrick Gilliam, who inherited it; his grandparents bought it in the 1940s. He has promised to let the residents use the space for at least five years. At the end of that time, BAME CDC and residents can take it apart and move it to another site if needed. Over 400 people have donated their time, resources and passion to make this community space come to life. Funding has come from The San Diego Foundation, Supervisor Greg Cox, Councilmember David Alvarez, LISC San Diego, The Mission Continues, SDG&E and many other individual donors. |

On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
