August 30, 2016 – San Diego, CA – The San Diego Foundation today announced the hire of two new leadership positions: Susan Bantz, Chief Operating Officer, and Cami Mattson, Director of Charitable Giving.
Bantz will manage day-to-day operations, including community impact programs and key functions such as team development, human resources, and contracts administration. Bantz is uniquely qualified to drive organizational alignment, accountability and operational excellence. She previously served as Vice President of Hospital Operations for Ethos Veterinary Health where she oversaw the operational needs of three specialty hospitals with $45 million in annual revenue. As former Chief Executive Officer for the Children’s Physicians Medical Group, Bantz brings a breadth of executive leadership and management experience to The Foundation. Bantz earned a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration from San Jose State University.
Mattson will lead a team responsible for building enduring assets to increase effective philanthropy across the region by helping donors make an impact in the San Diego community. She will help personalize charitable giving by establishing donor advised funds and legacy gifts, opening non-profit endowment funds, or contributing to existing funds at The San Diego Foundation. Mattson most recently served as Director of Community Relations for Cox Communications where she was responsible for strategy, including employee volunteerism, the Cox Cares Foundation and its corporate giving in Southern California. During her career, Mattson has built strong relationships with local corporations and individuals to increase collaboration and partnerships. She also worked as President and Chief Executive Officer of the San Diego North Convention and Visitors Bureau. Mattson earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations and communications from Brigham Young University, and has received numerous community awards, including the Jack Raymond Community Leadership Award.

On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
