Mark Stuart, CFRE

President & CEO
San Diego Foundation

Mark Stuart is a fundraising and community-building professional with nearly 40 years of experience in nonprofit leadership. As President and CEO of San Diego Foundation, he reports to and collaborates with the Board of Governors and leads the organization’s strategy, partnerships and operations.

Under Mark’s leadership, San Diego Foundation has experienced significant growth. Assets under management increased from $850 million in 2019 to $1.8 billion in 2026. Annual grantmaking exceeds $100 million, supported by the generosity of 1,200 donor-advised fundholders. Staff size has doubled, and for six consecutive years, the organization has been named a San Diego Top Workplace by the San Diego Union-Tribune. By the end of fiscal year 2026, the Foundation’s lifetime grantmaking since 1975 is projected to surpass $2 billion.

During the Foundation’s 50th Anniversary, the Board of Governors launched the Fifty & Forward campaign, a six-year fundraising and grantmaking effort that became the first-of-its-kind for a community foundation. The campaign set two goals: raise $1 billion to support current and future community needs, and grant $500 million across three priority areas: healthy children and families, education, and the environment. The fundraising goal has been exceeded and more than $400 million has already been granted, with the full $500 million on track to be awarded by Dec. 31, 2026.

During Mark’s tenure, the Foundation received a $116 million unrestricted gift from philanthropist Jay Kahn—one of the largest gifts to a U.S. community foundation.

Notable programs and initiatives launched during Mark’s tenure include the Policy & Innovation Center, San Diego Housing Fund, El Camino Fund, the Lotus Fund, National Rainbow College Fund, and the San Diego Unity Fund.

Prior to joining the Foundation, Mark managed a staff of 64 and a budget of $14 million at San Diego Zoo Global (SDZG), overseeing development, membership, and government and community relations. Under his leadership, SDZG raised $530 million in its first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign. Mark also served as the founding President of the Foundation for San Diego Zoo Global.

Mark was Associate Dean of Development and Alumni Relations for the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. During his tenure, the school raised $100 million in one of the largest fundraising campaigns for a veterinary school at that time.

Mark serves on the San Diego Symphony Foundation Board of Directors and as Board Secretary for the League of California Community Foundations. He previously served on the McDaniel College Board of Trustees and the Certified Fundraising Executives International Board of Directors. He is also a recognized expert on the art and science of fundraising, and a frequent presenter at national and regional conferences. He serves on the adjunct faculty at San Diego State University’s Fowler School of Business.

Mark has lived in San Diego for more than 20 years and has a lifelong interest in leadership studies and philanthropy. Colleagues describe Mark as a strategic, creative, innovative, and collaborative leader committed to building strong relationships and supporting staff development.

Mark has been recognized as Outstanding Fundraising Professional by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, San Diego, and is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE).

He received a master’s degree in educational administration with a focus on the support and evaluation of personnel from McDaniel College and a bachelor’s degree in English, political science and public service from Albion College.
