Dean Gerdeman

Assistant Director, Education Initiatives

Dean Gerdeman is Assistant Director for Education Initiatives at San Diego Foundation, with 20 years of experience partnering to support innovation, elevate evidence, and advance equity in public education. In his current role, Dean supports investments and partnerships that enhance learning environments and expand opportunity for San Diego youth. He manages a portfolio focused on a thriving teacher workforce, co-leads work to strengthen college and career pathways, and collaborates with partners to position community philanthropy as a trusted voice and change agent for education initiatives and policy.

Previously, Dean served as vice president at American Institutes for Research, leading a portfolio of more than 75 sponsored education projects focused on evidence-based practice and innovation in instruction, STEM, technology, and educator development. He held leadership roles for complex initiatives, including the Regional Educational Laboratories, the Department of Defense STEM Education Consortium, and large-scale education impact studies.
Dean is a former American Association for the Advancement of Science Policy Fellow at the National Science Foundation. He earned a Ph.D. in education and master’s degrees in biology and education from UCLA.
