Responding & Adapting Together
San Diego’s natural beauty and quality of life are part of what makes our region special, but a changing climate is creating new risks for our communities.
Since 2006, the Climate Initiative has supported organizations working to reduce emissions, strengthen local preparedness and protect the people and places most affected by environmental change.
Through research, public education and community collaboration, the initiative advances local solutions that make San Diego safer, healthier and more sustainable for everyone.
The Climate Initiative helps to:
Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Reaching a carbon-neutral future means helping communities and industries transition to renewable energy sources – including solar, wind and hydropower – and reducing emissions across transportation, housing and business sectors.
Address Climate Impacts
Some neighborhoods face greater risks from extreme heat, flooding and poor air quality. The initiative supports projects that protect health and safety in these communities and improve access to clean air, water and green spaces for all residents.
Strengthen Community Readiness
Local environmental nonprofits play a vital role in climate action but often have limited resources. SDF invests in capacity-building efforts, including training, communications, and partnership development, to help these organizations secure funding and expand their impact.
