October 5, 2015 – San Diego, CA – Second Chance, a nonprofit dedicated to creating opportunities for people to transform their own lives through programs that provide job readiness and life skills training, job placement, behavioral health and prisoner re-entry services, relapse prevention and sober-living housing for adults and youth in need, today announced that The San Diego Foundation has been named the official title sponsor of its fall benefit with keynote speaker Piper Kerman.

In a partnership between the two organizations, The San Diego Foundation Presents “Orange is the New Black: The Real Story with Piper Kerman,” a Benefit for Second Chance. Piper Kerman, author of the memoir Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, will be the keynote speaker at the highly anticipated event on Oct. 17, 2015, at Qualcomm Hall with all proceeds benefiting Second Chance.

This San Diego community event is designed to help explain the failure of the current prison system and the solution provided by Second Chance to get people off the streets and into the workforce to become contributing members of society.

“The support and sponsorship of an organization such as The San Diego Foundation strengthens our mission to publicly address the failures of the current prison system within our community,” said Robert Coleman, President and CEO of Second Chance. “With the support of our title sponsor, this benefit event will further assist us at Second Chance to continue to raise awareness and provide solutions empowering community members to make sustainable personal changes that positively impact society.”

Proceeds from this event will enable Second Chance to continue its ongoing work to support adults and youth in the community to leave their past mistakes behind and work toward a positive future and self-sufficiency. All money raised at the benefit will provide stable, year-round funding for job readiness training, development programs for disadvantaged youth, job placement services, sober living housing and behavioral health treatment.

“The San Diego Foundation is committed to supporting Second Chance and other organizations working to improve the quality of life in all our communities,” said The San Diego Foundation President and CEO Kathlyn Mead. “Developing skills to better manage life’s challenges, job readiness and, more importantly, access to jobs, advances the common good.”
