November 13, 2015 – San Diego, CA – During the week of November 12-18, 2015, The San Diego Foundation will join more than 750 community foundations across the nation celebrating Community Foundation Week.
For more than 25 years, the effort has raised awareness about the increasingly important role that organizations like The Foundation have in fostering local collaboration and innovation to identify and address social challenges and opportunities.
“Community foundations play a meaningful role in the growth and health of a region,” shared Foundation CEO and President Kathlyn Mead. “The San Diego Foundation represents one of the largest donor networks in San Diego, and together, we help move our community forward for future generations.”
In Fiscal Year 2015, The Foundation granted $48 million to San Diego nonprofits responding to community needs throughout the county. In its 40 year history, The Foundation has generated a $1.5 billion impact for the San Diego region, including $939 million granted to nonprofits, $422 million in current endowment funds, and $164 million in current non-endowment funds.
Community foundations steward philanthropic resources from institutional and individual donors to local nonprofits providing vital services to our community. These place-based organizations represent one of the fastest-growing forms of philanthropy. Every U.S. state is home to at least one community foundation, working collaboratively to advance solutions on a wide range of community needs such as arts, culture & humanity; civil society and social innovation; disaster preparedness and relief; education (including STEM), environment; food, agriculture and nutrition; health & human services; housing and shelter; public safety; science & technology, and youth development.
To strengthen and promote a vibrant future in San Diego now and forever, The Foundation established the Fund for the Future, an endowment fund that enables donors to respond to unforeseen challenges and seize opportunities to address the most pressing needs of our region.

On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
