March 25, 2015 – San Diego, CA – The San Diego Foundation today announced the hire of two new directors in key leadership positions: Michelle Jaramillo as Community Impact Director, and Justin Nunez as Communications Director.
Jaramillo will develop and manage strategies that drive the implementation of priorities derived from “Our Greater San Diego Vision,” collectively known as WELL (Work, Enjoy, Live, Learn). Through comprehensive collaboration with non-profit organizations, community stakeholders, government, business, philanthropy, and academia, the collective and leveraged effort of Jaramillo and The San Diego Foundation Community Impact team will help to create systemic change to address the important needs of the region. Jaramillo previously worked at the San Diego Housing Federation and U.S. – Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership where she built a track record in furthering the mission, impact and visibility of these organizations that are tackling complex regional issues. Jaramillo’s civic leadership and volunteerism is highlighted in her work on several advisory teams of The San Diego Foundation, as well as the founding of the San Diego Chapter of Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy and the co-founding of the Latina Giving Circle of San Diego. She graduated from the University of San Diego with a master’s degree in nonprofit leadership and management.
Nunez will generate awareness for The San Diego Foundation and its region-wide impact in the San Diego community. He joins the Communications team to develop and execute a strong public relations plan to create awareness for the services, projects and community impact of The Foundation. Nunez previously worked as an account director for the San Diego office of LEWIS PR, a global communications agency where he managed communications strategies and plans for some of the agency’s largest clients. Nunez started his public relations career in Washington, D.C. where he managed communications and media relations for national coalitions focused on energy, healthcare and financial reform. Nunez earned a bachelor’s degree in management with an emphasis in marketing from Boston College.

On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
