Guided by our vision of just, equitable and resilient communities, the work of San Diego Foundation in 2025 – our 50th anniversary year – focused on building strong families, future leaders and healthy environments across our region.
In collaboration with donors and partners like you, in 2025 we increased essential services, expanded opportunities for those furthest from them and deepened community investments that help San Diegans thrive.
From record-breaking scholarship awards to historic collaborations, here are the top 10 moments that shaped 2025.
1. A Historic Milestone: Fifty & Forward Campaign Surpasses $1 Billion
Celebrating 50 years of impact isn’t only about looking back. It’s also about looking forward. The Fifty & Forward campaign — the most ambitious fundraising effort in SDF’s history — surpassed $1 billion in donations this year. Reaching this milestone, made possible by the generosity of donors and organizations across the county, marks a defining moment for the next era of SDF’s community-driven impact. We also topped $405 million in grantmaking toward the campaign’s three focus areas – children and families, education and the environment – closing in on our $500 million goal.
2. Expanding Opportunity Through Record Breaking Scholarships
SDF donors awarded a record-breaking $5.5 million, the largest scholarship value in our history, to help nearly 1,400 mostly first-generation students pursue their educational dreams and career goals. The SDF Community Scholarship Program distributed 1,678 awards, including 789 first-time awardees. This marks the shared generosity of donors and community partners to build pathways for education and college success for future generations.
3. An Unprecedented Partnership to Support Families: United for San Diego
In response to deep cuts to publicly funded safety net programs, SDF joined Prebys Foundation, Price Philanthropies and the Price family to launch United for San Diego — an unprecedented partnership aligning giving strategies to protect the well-being of local children and families. Together, these funders increased our combined annual giving by $70 million to stabilize essential services and strengthen community response to the urgent needs of San Diegans. To bolster this goal, SDF also launched the San Diego Unity Fund so everyone can support San Diegans in need. Held and administered by SDF, 100% of your donations are granted to nonprofits that keep San Diegans housed, fed and healthy.
4. Recognized for Excellence: Nonprofit of the Year & the 2025 TRUST Award
San Diego Foundation received two distinguished honors that reflect our continued commitment to transparency, stewardship and community-centered philanthropy. SDF was nominated by CA Senator Akilah Weber and named a San Diego Nonprofit of the Year by California Association of Nonprofits. SDF also received the University of San Diego Nonprofit Institute’s TRUST Award for excellence in governance and philanthropy. These recognitions are a reflection of strong board and organizational leadership and impact.
5. A Record-Breaking San Diego Fundraising Conference
Nonprofit professionals representing more than 600 organizations gathered for the two-day 2025 San Diego Fundraising Conference presented by PNC Bank — the largest in the event’s 3-year history. Amid a challenging fundraising environment, leaders and practitioners came together to exchange ideas, build skills and reconnect to the heart of philanthropy: people supporting people. The conference continues to strengthen the region’s nonprofit sector by equipping organizations with the tools and relationships needed to better attract and retain donors to serve their communities. The conference returns September 9-10, 2026.
6. A Transformational Investment in Early Literacy
SDF and Dr. Seuss Foundation launched Ready to Learn, a $15 million initiative to strengthen early childhood literacy and support reading readiness for young children across San Diego County. Building on a successful three-year partnership and more than $3 million invested through SDF’s Early Childhood Initiative, the program includes a permanent $15 million endowment that will provide sustained, long-term support for San Diego’s youngest learners.
7. A Vision for the Future: “The San Diego I Want to See”
During our 50th anniversary year, thousands of San Diegans shared their hopes and priorities for the region’s future as part of the Fifty & Forward campaign. Community members expressed aspirations related to affordability, opportunity, belonging, environmental resilience and more. These insights will help inform SDF’s philanthropic priorities in the years ahead and reflect our belief that meaningful community solutions begin with listening.
8. Accelerating Affordable Housing
Through a partnership with San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), SDF announced $14 million in new investments for 10 affordable housing projects across San Diego County. These funds, awarded through California’s Regional Early Action Planning (REAP 2.0) program, will help bring 966 affordable homes to the region by 2030. This milestone advances long-term housing stability and ensures more San Diegans can access safe, affordable places to live.
9. Strengthening Mental & Behavioral Health Support for Youth
With youth mental health issues now the leading cause of hospitalization in California, SDF awarded $2.1 million in grants to local nonprofits expanding access to mental and behavioral health services for children, youth and families. These investments help organizations deliver timely, equitable care while also strengthening the regional workforce pipeline, helping address the county’s projected need for an additional 18,500 mental and behavioral health professionals by 2027.
10. A Culture Where People Thrive: Top Workplace & Best Places to Work Honors
For the sixth consecutive year, SDF was named a San Diego Union-Tribune Top Workplace — an honor earned directly through feedback from our employees — and for the first time, we were also recognized as a Best Place to Work by the San Diego Business Journal based on employee survey results. These honors highlight SDF’s dedication to cultivating a supportive, mission-driven environment where staff are empowered to grow, collaborate and create meaningful impact for the communities we serve.
