WHAT: The STEAM Leadership Series, sponsored by The San Diego Foundation and other local partners, will host an event, “Clean Oceans, Clean Water, Clean Jobs,” for 350 San Diego Unified high school students on May 29 aboard the USS Midway Museum. Students will hear from local leaders and high-tech experts about new jobs in San Diego’s innovation and ocean tech economy. Following a keynote speech and panel, students will explore a festival of interactive ocean technology exhibits from 19 companies, such as Hydronalix, which will have water demonstrations of its robotic lifeguard; Aquacycl, which converts wastewater into electricity; and Clear Blue Sea, which cleans plastics in our oceans.

According to a local CONNECT Innovation Report, the regional innovation sector accounts for more than $55 billion of San Diego’s economic activity and directly impacts 400,500 jobs. Students will hear from many of today’s leaders in the innovation economy and learn how experiences in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) can better prepare them for future careers in the regional innovation economy.
