November 5, 2025 – San Diego, CA – San Diego Foundation (SDF) announced two personnel appointments today, including the hiring of Hiram Soto as Director of Marketing and Communications, and Nicole Turney as Director of Development. As the largest community foundation in San Diego County, SDF is dedicated to delivering world-class philanthropy through effective, collaborative partnerships. The organization has been recognized as a Top Workplace by The San Diego Union-Tribune for five consecutive years and was recently named a Top Workplace by the San Diego Business Journal for the first time.

Hiram Soto, Director of Marketing and Communications

Hiram Soto is an accomplished communications leader and former journalist with more than 20 years of experience shaping narratives and leading local, statewide and national campaigns that inform policy, deepen public understanding of complex issues, and strengthen community impact.

Before joining San Diego Foundation, Hiram led communications strategy for marketing and public relations agencies, nonprofit organizations, and multi-sector coalitions, working on issues ranging from human rights and mental health to environmental sustainability, education, and public policy.

Rooted in his journalism background and border-region perspective, Hiram brings a strategic approach to storytelling that builds trust and inspires action. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Redlands, is a certified translator and interpreter, and is an active member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Public Relations Society of America.

Nicole Turney, Director of Development

Nicole Turney is an experienced philanthropy and development leader with a global perspective and deep San Diego roots. She joins San Diego Foundation from TalkingPoints and began her career in AmeriCorps before spending 13 years in London, where she led major giving at UNICEF and helped build core funding for The Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Nicole holds dual bachelor’s degrees in politics and film and digital media from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a double master’s degree from University College London, where she studied international economics. A fourth-generation San Diegan, she is passionate about expanding opportunity and helping donors create lasting, meaningful impact across the region.
