October 15, 2025 — San Diego, CA – San Diego Foundation (SDF) today announced that the longstanding Black Alumni Scholarship Fund will be renamed in honor of its original founder and alumnus, Dr. Lennon Goins. The Goins Alumni Scholarship Fund will continue to support qualified UC San Diego students in pursuit of their academic and career goals.

The Goins Alumni Scholarship Fund honors the legacy of its founder, a distinguished UC San Diego alumnus whose lifelong commitment to education and community empowerment continues to inspire future generations.

“Dr. Goins embodied the spirit of UC San Diego through his dedication to scholarship and service,” said Mark Stuart, President & CEO of San Diego Foundation. “It’s an honor to partner with alumni and community leaders to carry forward his legacy by supporting students who will shape San Diego’s future.”

Ed Spriggs, fund advisor and a longtime community advocate and colleague of Dr. Goins, added: “Dr. Goins came from a poor sharecropper family in the South and exemplifies for all of us the power of education to transform lives. This scholarship ensures his passion and generosity live on through the success of UC San Diego students.”

Applications for the Dr. Lennon Goins Alumni Scholarship Fund are expected to open in 2026. More information about scholarship criteria and application details can be found at gasf-sandiego.com.
