January 19, 2018 – San Diego, CA – The San Diego Foundation announced Mel Katz and Cliff Schireson will join the Board of Governors, both starting two-year terms beginning December 13, 2017. Mel Katz is Co-founder and Executive Officer for Manpower Staffing Services of San Diego with more than 40 years of business management and community engagement experience. Cliff Schireson is a retired financial professional with 40 years of combined investment banking and investment management experience.

The San Diego Foundation Board of Governors is composed of 24 volunteers with diverse professional backgrounds who are involved in many community and charitable activities. The Board oversees The Foundation by establishing policy and strategy, setting priorities, and making final decisions to approve grants.

About the new Board of Governors members

Mel Katz
Mel Katz has been one of San Diego’s most respected business and civic leaders since 1977 when he purchased the local Manpower franchise with Phil Blair. Today, Manpower Staffing Services of San Diego is the largest of the Manpower franchises in the U.S. Mel’s devotion to both advancing economic equity for working people and civic improvement has earned him an impeccable reputation in the San Diego community. He is an outspoken advocate of K-12 and post-secondary education.

Mel also serves as a board member of the UC San Diego Foundation, the San Diego Rotary Foundation, e3 Civic High and inewsource. He previously served as board chair of the San Diego Public Library Foundation, San Diego Workforce Partnership, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, the San Diego Convention Center, American Cancer Society and the San Diego Library Commission.

Alongside his wife, Linda, Mel was awarded Mr. and Mrs. San Diego 2017 by Rotary 33 of San Diego.

Clifford (“Cliff”) Schireson
Cliff has 40 years of combined work experience in investment banking and investment management. In 2004, he was recruited from New York City to become Director and co-head of Fixed Income at San Diego investment firm Brandes Investment Partners. While at Brandes, he was the portfolio manager working with The San Diego Foundation on its investment in emerging markets equity strategy. Cliff’s work also included the underwriting and placement of cross-border and domestic syndicated loans, asset securitizations, mezzanine and other high-yield financings, and senior and subordinated debt private placements.

Cliff has served as board chair for the La Jolla Music Society and has been a member of the board of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation. He also works as an alumni relations and fundraising volunteer for Stanford University, where he has earned multiple recognitions for his service, including the Governor’s Award.

Cliff received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Stanford University and a Master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.
