January 22, 2015 – San Diego, CA – The San Diego Foundation has named James Howell vice president and chief financial officer. His responsibilities include oversight of the accounting, finance, and information technology roles at The Foundation.
Howell is a member of The Foundation’s leadership team, coordinates the finance and audit committees, and works closely with staff, professional volunteers, auditors, and other service providers to establish, administer, and monitor internal financial reporting, internal controls, cash management, insurance, grants administration, and information systems.
“Jim is a valuable addition to our leadership team at The San Diego Foundation,” President and CEO Kathlyn Mead stated. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his role as CFO, but more importantly, he is committed to working collaboratively to ensure San Diego is the best place to work, enjoy, live and learn (WELL). Jim also has a proven ability to lead and support growth initiatives, which will benefit our organization as we strive to advance the mission and goals of The Foundation.”
The CFO position allows Howell to leverage his experience of more than 25 year across finance, accounting, information technology, and strategic planning disciplines. Prior to joining The San Diego Foundation, Howell was the chief investment officer and director of research at Canterbury Consulting.
His new role will mark a return to a position of nonprofit leadership. From 2007 to 2012, Howell was the chief investment officer and director of finance at The Scripps Research Institute, responsible for investments, treasury, risk management, and associated audit and control activities. In that capacity, he worked actively with the TSRI board of trustees, chief financial officer, and staff directing investment, banking, and insurance relationships for over $1.6 billion of endowment, pension, and other assets.
“I am excited about our CEO’s vision and leadership and look forward to working with such an esteemed board of governors and community leaders,” Howell said. “This is a unique opportunity to make an impact on regional initiatives within the greater San Diego community.”
Howell currently serves on the investment advisory committee of Loma Linda University and the Alliance Healthcare Foundation finance committee. He holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and a master of business education from Georgia State University. Howell is a chartered financial analyst (CFA) and certified treasury professional (CTP).

On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
