May 28, 2025 – San Diego, CA – In a landmark celebration of 50 years of community generosity and regional impact, San Diego Foundation (SDF) today announced it has granted more than $1.8 billion to nonprofits since its founding in 1975 – an extraordinary milestone made possible through the unwavering generosity of thousands of donors and partners committed to a better future for all San Diegans.
The announcement was shared at a press conference at the Copley-Price Family YMCA/YMCA of San Diego County – one of SDF’s most trusted grantees and enduring partnerships – featuring San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, County Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe and U.S. Rep. Scott Peters. To mark the occasion, state representatives recognized SDF as Nonprofit of the Year and 15 cities and the County of San Diego officially issued proclamations celebrating “San Diego Foundation Day,” honoring five decades of positive impact throughout the region.
Honoring a Legacy of Generosity & Community Transformation
As the largest community foundation in the region, SDF plays a unique role in responding to San Diego’s evolving needs. Community foundations like SDF steward charitable assets, direct resources where they are needed, and strengthen the fabric of local communities through place-based giving.
“For 50 years, San Diego Foundation has served as a catalyst for change — connecting generous donors with opportunities to improve lives across our region,” said Mark Stuart, President and CEO of San Diego Foundation. “As we celebrate all that we’ve accomplished together, we are deeply grateful to the many leaders and organizations we’ve forged partnerships with to help those furthest from opportunity and to ensure San Diego is a place we all feel proud to call home. As we look ahead, we are steadfast in our commitment to just, equitable and resilient communities.”
Since 1975, SDF has grown into the region’s largest community foundation, with:
- $1.8 billion granted to strengthen nonprofits and San Diego communities
- $1.6 billion in charitable assets under stewardship, ensuring a permanent philanthropic resource for future generations
- 2,400 charitable funds supporting meaningful, local impact
From funding educational equity and environmental initiatives to responding swiftly during crises such as wildfires, the 2024 San Diego floods and the COVID-19 pandemic, SDF’S journey reflects a shared commitment to community. These efforts are made possible because of the continued support of donors who show up when San Diego needs them most.
A Celebration of Shared Purpose
“San Diego Foundation exemplifies what happens when philanthropy, public service and community vision come together,” said County Supervisor Montgomery Steppe. “The Foundation’s 50-year legacy of impact has touched countless lives, strengthened our social safety net, and created pathways to prosperity for generations of San Diegans. The County is proud to partner with San Diego Foundation in advancing equity, and opportunity for all.”
“This milestone is not just about the Foundation – it’s about the lives changed because someone cared enough to give, to partner, to show up,” said Dr. Pamela Luster, Chair of the SDF Board of Directors. “The work of San Diego Foundation has always been about people. We are thankful for every donor who has invested in the place we call home. Together, we are creating a San Diego where everyone has a chance to thrive.”
Nonprofit of the Year & “San Diego Foundation Day”
In recognition of SDF’s 50 years of giving and impact, the community foundation was named Nonprofit of the Year by CA Senator Akilah Weber Pierson in a ceremony on May 21 at the state capital. And in a gesture of regional representation, “San Diego Foundation Day” was celebrated in the month of May by San Diego County and 15 cities, including:

Fifty & Forward: Investing in San Diego’s Future
At the heart of SDF’s anniversary celebration is Fifty & Forward, a bold grantmaking and fundraising campaign designed to meet pressing needs and opportunities for education, children and families, and the environment for the next 50 years. Campaign goals include granting $500 million to nonprofits and raising $1 billion to fuel impact for the next 50 years.
To date, through Fifty & Forward, SDF has:
- Granted $369 million to nonprofits serving children and families, advancing education and protecting the environment
- Raised $891 million, making it one of the largest grantmaking and philanthropic campaigns in San Diego County history
Recent initiatives include:
- A four-year, $4 million commitment to make college a reality for local students furthest from opportunity;
- A $15 million endowment, established in partnership with Dr. Seuss Foundation to help children ages 0 to 5 thrive and be ready to learn in perpetuity; and
- Nearly $2 million invested in 24 cross-border projects through the Binational Resilience Initiative to build regional resilience to climate change
These achievements underscore what’s possible when vision is matched by generosity.
“Every dollar entrusted to us is a vote of confidence in the future of San Diego,” said Stuart.
