In this Meet our Investments Team blog series, we’re introducing the professionals who guide and manage the Foundation’s investment strategies. By getting to know them, you’ll see the people, value and experience behind the numbers – working to preserve and grow the charitable resources entrusted to us.

In today’s post, meet Matt Fettig, Vice President, Chief Investment Officer.

What is your favorite part about working at San Diego Foundation (SDF)?

I love that I get to pursue my passion of investing while helping to fulfill the mission of SDF in my favorite city in the world.

When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you usually spend it?

I have twin 12-year-old children who keep me plenty busy in my free time. Whether it’s helping with homework or watching a sporting event, I prioritize spending my free time with my kids.

What do you hope donors and partners take away from your Quarterly Investment updates?

While our video updates are brief, I hope they inspire confidence that SDF brings a sophisticated style of investing our donors’ charitable dollars.

How do you make time for work-life balance?

I’ve always made sure to prioritize balance. I find hobbies that I can be as passionate about as my work. I love to travel, and doing so certainly gets you away from the office and provides time to reflect on the rest of the world.

How did you get started working in the nonprofit sector?

I began in the investment consulting industry, consulting to nonprofit organizations. I always felt one step removed from the mission of these organizations. The move to SDF has removed that obstacle.

What’s your favorite spot in your neighborhood?

As a resident of Tierrasanta, I thoroughly enjoy our canyons and trails. I have nature at my fingertips…and literally outside of my backyard. It helps me relax on a stressful day.

What inspires you in your work?

Learning inspires me. While history can sometimes rhyme with the present, there is always something different or new in the markets that requires learning. I get to learn something new just about every day in my work.

What’s your favorite book (or one you’ve recently enjoyed)?

Rama Revealed by Arthur C. Clarke is my favorite book of all time. I find it fascinating to think about what might be beyond our own planet and solar system. The entire series brings me joy, and I have read it several times.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

When I entered the workforce, my dad told me to always volunteer to do the work that nobody else wants to do and do it with a smile on your face. I truly believe that helped me advance my career to where I am today.
