In this Meet our Investments Team blog series, we’re introducing the professionals who guide and manage SDF’s investment strategies. By getting to know them, you’ll see the people, values and experience behind the numbers, working to preserve and grow the charitable resources entrusted to us.
In today’s post, meet Colleen Smiley, Director of Investments.
What is your favorite part about working at San Diego Foundation?
I love seeing the outcomes that our incredibly passionate, intelligent colleagues produce throughout the San Diego region. I continue to learn from them daily.
What do you enjoy most about partnering with donors and philanthropists?
I enjoy finding the spark of connection and understanding what motivates our donors.
How did you get started working in the nonprofit or philanthropic sector?
I am relatively new to working in the nonprofit sector, although I have served on nonprofit boards over the course of my career. I was inspired to join San Diego Foundation from the investment industry to combine my passion for community building with my expertise in investments.
What inspires you in your work?
I look at the generations coming behind me and am committed to raising up our children to be able to strive and achieve their full potential in a healthy, supportive environment.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
“Assume positive intent.” Many misunderstandings or miscommunications can be mitigated by first assuming that the other party is coming from a good place.
How do you make time for work/life balance?
As a working parent, maintaining a work-life balance takes a LOT of planning, including a highly detailed online calendar and a weekly family calendar review. Scheduling out our time makes it possible to attend the karate belt exams, soccer games and piano recitals, as well as finding time for exercise and time with friends and family.
When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you usually spend it?
I will almost always grab the book that I’m currently reading and squeeze in a few minutes of reading, which is a source of entertainment and quiet. When people ask me how I finish 100+ books a year, I always tell them to find those small blocks of time, which really add up!
What’s your favorite book (or one you’ve recently enjoyed)?
An almost impossible question to answer! My five-star reads from this year were Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid and My Friends by Fredrik Backman.
What do you hope donors and partners take away from the quarterly Investment Video updates?
I hope our donors and partners are confident that San Diego Foundation’s investment team is a responsible steward for their capital. We understand the trust that they place in us to invest one of their most crucial assets—the funds to help them grow and continue in their missions.
What does philanthropy mean to you personally?
Philanthropy is a way of life, an opportunity to freely give my time, energy and resources to causes that deeply matter to me. At this stage in my life, it means volunteering at my children’s schools, serving on the Board of Directors of a literacy-focused nonprofit and supporting organizations that champion public education, essential public services and the creation of just and equitable communities.
