December 18, 2017 – La Jolla, CA – The La Jolla Community Foundation (LJCF), an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, today announced a $12,000 grant that will support a yearlong cleanup project along heavily-trafficked La Jolla Parkway. The project, led by I Love a Clean San Diego, is supported by a matching gift from an anonymous donor at the La Jolla Community Foundation.

La Jolla Parkway is the main thoroughfare for residents and tourists traveling in and out of La Jolla. Given its high usage, the road is in constant need of maintenance to protect the safety of drivers and the surrounding environment. The LJCF grant will support 24 cleanups in 2017 and 2018, led by I Love a Clean San Diego and its partners.

“La Jolla Parkway is one of the region’s most heavily trafficked roads in the area, used daily by thousands of residents and visitors alike,” explained Natalie Roberts-DeCarli, Senior Director of Operations at I Love a Clean San Diego. “Large items such a couches and other debris are regularly found along the roadside. Without grant support from the La Jolla Community Foundation and its anonymous donor, this litter would remain along the entrance into La Jolla, posing a threat to drivers, wildlife and the environment.”

I Love a Clean San Diego is partnering with Adopt-A-Highway to facilitate cleanup on La Jolla Parkway. Since the project started, the two organizations have removed 5,000 gallons of litter and 2,000 pounds of large debris from the roadway.

“This generous donor gift and match from La Jolla Community Foundation is an example of the passion of many residents in our community who are determined to find solutions to improve the safety and beauty of La Jolla,” shared Andy Nelson, LJCF Board Member. “Philanthropists in La Jolla have left a significant mark on the community through their charitable giving, which often helps supplement City spending on important needs, such as cleanup and maintenance of local roads.”

LJCF is dedicated to fostering a sense of community and connection among La Jollans to enrich the environmental, social and cultural experience in the community. LJCF also provides La Jolla community members a vehicle for legacy planning and gifts, and encourages creation of special project funds that will benefit La Jolla, now and in perpetuity.
