July 13, 2023 – San Diego, CA – San Diego Foundation announced today that Gloria Corral, President & CEO of the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE), and Leena Gupta, co-founder of the fundraising app Coin Up, have joined the San Diego Foundation Board of Governors.

“Gloria and Leena bring a wealth of professional experience and community advocacy to our board so San Diego Foundation can continue to inspire enduring philanthropy and enable community solutions to improve the quality of life in our region,” said Mark Stuart, President & CEO, San Diego Foundation.

In addition to Corral and Gupta joining the SDF Board of Governors, Pamela Luster, President Emerita of San Diego Mesa College, was appointed as Chair of the SDF Board of Governors. Her two-year term began July 1.

The Board of Governors also recently approved $60,000 in grants to four local nonprofit organizations, including:

  • CLUB FBS Mentorship Program, a book club and character-building program for Black males in grades 7 – 12 that is dedicated to improving the grade-level reading rates of middle and high school Black males and elevating social–emotional well-being through character-building and positive masculinity models. Funding will be used to launch programs at four schools in fall 2023, including Mission Bay High, Morse High, Lincoln High, and Mann Middle schools.
  • San Diego City College for exploration and development of mental health and social services careers through outreach to middle and high school students, partnerships with four-year and two-year colleges and universities with existing programs, and recommendations on credentialing and transfer degree programs.
  • Binational Resilience Initiative to fund additional binational coastal resilience projects in the Cali-Baja region spanning from Oceanside to Ensenada. Grants from this program will be announced in late July. The Binational Resilience Initiative is a partnership between SDF and the International Community Foundation.
  • Community Scholars Initiative to fund additional scholarships through the SDF program that helps San Diegans prepare for, pay for and persist through college by providing financial support and critical wraparound services that bolster academic achievement. Since 2017, the SDF Community Scholars Initiative and its six community-based partners have supported more than 360 low-income, first-generation college students throughout San Diego County.

The grants are made at the discretion of the SDF Board of Governors and demonstrate members’ dedication to community-based organizations that exemplify the SDF vision for just, equitable and resilient communities.

The San Diego Foundation Board of Governors is composed of volunteers with diverse professional backgrounds, who participate in many community and charitable activities throughout San Diego.
