WHAT: 25 and Under! The Future of Philanthropy in San Diego – The San Diego Foundation Center for Civic Engagement hosts the fifth conversation in the Future40 event series. 25 and Under! is an event open to everyone that will bring San Diego’s young emerging leaders together to discuss how they are leveraging philanthropy and innovation to make a lasting impact on some of the region’s most pressing challenges.
WHO: Nate Howard – Nate is the founder of Movement BE, a nonprofit organization that helps young people discover their story through spoken word poetry. This program is currently being implemented at the Monarch School, which serves students impacted by homelessness. Nate will speak about how he goes beyond textbook learning to empower youth of all backgrounds. Through his work, he shows underserved and underrepresented youth that they have a place in the world and can effect real change.

Winnie Xu – Winnie is a co-founder of Giventure, an app to connect students to volunteer opportunities based on passions. She will discuss how technology is making it easier for individuals of all ages to match their passions with volunteerism and civic engagement. Winnie’s work is an example of how new technology platforms bring people together faster and create more opportunities for philanthropy.

Macy Olivas – Macy is a recipient of The Patricia & Christopher Weil Foundation MKC College Sponsorship through The San Diego Foundation, and is now Executive Director of the Weil Foundation. As an example of how youth support and empowerment can directly affect future impact, Macy will talk about how philanthropy in the form of scholarships and other programs can jump start careers and create an opportunity for those who otherwise may not have the means to make a difference.

WHY: For four decades, The San Diego Foundation has grown a more vibrant region by supporting ideas, as well as the individuals who conceive them and institutions that propel them.

Future40 is a series of public events that continues this legacy by engaging leading thinkers to raise provocative questions, highlight new possibilities, and challenge our assumptions about the future of San Diego.

The Future40 series marks the 40th anniversary of The Foundation, and extends the conversation through 2015 to help us explore the possibilities for our region. Future40 engages a wide cross-section of San Diegans, including thought leaders, scholars, and champions of change, who will raise important questions, discuss changing constructs, and identify emerging opportunities — and through these exchanges, shape a more equitable future for all.
