Fundraising remains one of the biggest challenges, as well as opportunities, in the nonprofit world. Those who master this fundamental area thrive. Those who don’t invest in this skill often miss out on new resources and organizational growth.
“Every dollar spent on development will raise four dollars for an organization,” according to the Stanford Social Innovation Review.
The San Diego Foundation has partnered with National University to provide a four-part fundraising education program for nonprofit organizations and leaders who want to enhance their expertise and improve development efforts.
The Fundraising Academy Certificate Program will provide nonprofit leaders with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed in the world of philanthropy and nonprofit fundraising.
As leading fundraiser and philanthropy expert Henry Russo explains it, “Fundraising is the gentle art of teaching the joy of giving.”
Fundraising and leadership skills training and education is at the core of successful nonprofit organizations. In addition to providing fundraising-focused training for San Diego’s leaders, the program aims to increase opportunities for regional collaborations among the participating organizations.

“We are dedicated to helping build a better tomorrow for future generations, and this coordinated effort supports that goal by ensuring more positive impacts for our communities in the San Diego region,” emphasized Dr. Michael Cunningham, President of National University.
The program will adopt a fundraising-focused curriculum that reflects the mission of the university’s Sanford Institute of Philanthropy, which was created through the generous support of philanthropist and entrepreneur T. Denny Sanford.
Program participants will meet four times throughout the year for 2-4 days of intensive training. Graduates of the program will receive a certificate from the Fundraising Academy.
The program is now accepting applications. Interested nonprofit organizations and aspiring fundraisers are encouraged to apply.
On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
