June 2, 2025 – San Diego – On May 22, Chula Vista Community Foundation (CVCF), an affiliate of San Diego Foundation (SDF), held its Annual Grant Awards Celebration, awarding $60,000 to two local nonprofits whose programs address well-being and humane treatment of animals in Chula Vista.

“For the CVCF 2025 grant cycle, our members voted to focus on animal welfare in our city,” said Robert Farwell, CVCF board chair. “The two organizations chosen are dedicated to combatting animal overpopulation, alleviating the need to surrender pets due to financial or family hardships, and creating a culture of compassion towards animals and their families living in Chula Vista.”

Since 2011, CVCF has granted more than $800,000 to over 45 nonprofit programs that strengthen the quality of life for all who live, work and enjoy Chula Vista.

The list of 2025-2026 grantees includes:

  • Chula Vista Animal Care Facility – Safe Transport for Sheltered Animals and Specialty Medical Fund – $30,000
The Chula Vista Animal Care Facility will enhance the operations of the newly acquired transport van allowing safe transport of up to 13 animals to adoption events, other shelters, and emergency rescues. The Medical Specialty Fund will address urgent medical needs, ensuring that more animals receive life-saving care, improving the health and quality of life for shelter animals. The Chula Vista Animal Care Facility hopes to create a sustainable model for animal care and foster a culture of compassion within the community.
  • SBCS (formerly South Bay Community Services) – Families United with Resilience (FUR) Pilot Program – $30,000
Families United with Resilience (FUR) Pilot program aims to implement fully pet-friendly accommodation in the SBCS domestic violence shelter and transitional housing in Chula Vista, allowing families to stay with their pets as they seek safety and stability. Recognizing that pets provide essential emotional support, the initiative addresses the challenge faced by victims who might otherwise have to choose between their safety and their animals. The focus is on animal welfare and aims to reduce barriers for families in need by providing access to vital resources like veterinary care and pet supplies. Ultimately, the project seeks to create a compassionate, pet-inclusive model that can be extended throughout the region.
