WHAT: “25 and Under! The Future of Service in San Diego” – The San Diego Foundation Center for Civic Engagement, in partnership with Cal State San Marcos Student Life & Leadership, presents an event featuring San Diego’s young innovators. In this panel discussion, the next generation of changemakers will share how they are supporting our most underserved communities to navigate an ever-changing and more connected future, and to inspire a new generation of philanthropists.
WHO: Francisco “Panchito” Martinez was recently named 2015 Outstanding Youth/Student Volunteer of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, San Diego. He graduated from the Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI), a nonprofit organization that helps disadvantaged students succeed in college, and currently assists BLCI with developing and implementing student leadership programs. He attends San Diego State University as a Vice President of Student Affairs Leadership Scholar and his goal is to transform underserved communities, like his own, by providing access to higher education.

Nitya Timalsina is the Founder of One Step Projects (OSP), a nonprofit organization that aims to resolve environmental issues and improve living conditions worldwide. She is passionate about sustainable development and youth empowerment and seeks to unite bright young minds with disadvantaged communities to create measurable impact. Timalsina empowers students and young entrepreneurs in San Diego to develop their engineering and technical skills by creating cheap, innovative, open-source designs for an earthquake-proof, self-sustaining ‘model village’ in rural Nepal. In the next year, OSP will engage secondary school students, primarily 7th-12th graders in the San Diego area, in creating customized solutions for the local San Diego community.

Sean Griser won the 2015 Outstanding Service Learning Student of the Year at Cal State San Marcos (CSUSM) for a music therapy project for residents with Alzheimer’s disease. He is a Service Learning Student Ambassador in the Office of Service Learning and a psychology major at CSUSM.
