April 7, 2026 – San Diego, CA – To date, 108 San Diego residents have become first-time homeowners through the Access Granted Homebuyer Program, a San Diego Foundation-funded program. This milestone marks significant progress in expanding access to homeownership in one of the nation’s least affordable housing markets, where only 15% of households can afford to buy a home.

The program is supported by San Diego Foundation (SDF), LISC San Diego and Urban League of San Diego County.

Access Granted provides qualifying first-time homebuyers in San Diego County with up to $70,000 in down payment assistance, along with financial education to support lasting financial security and successful homeownership.

Together, these homebuyers have purchased more than $48 million in home value, strengthening their financial futures and contributing to our region’s economy.

To further support prospective buyers, the Urban League will host a HUD-certified homebuyer education workshop on June 27, offering tools and guidance to help participants navigate the homebuying process. More information about the program is available from the Urban League of San Diego County.

As demand for the program continues to grow, SDF and its partners are seeking additional philanthropic and community support to expand access to homeownership across the region.

“Homeownership remains one of the most powerful ways to build long-term stability and generational wealth, yet it’s still out of reach for far too many San Diegans,” said Pamela Gray Payton, Vice President, Chief Impact and Partnerships Officer at San Diego Foundation. “Programs like Access Granted are designed to close that gap. The need is significant, and continued investment is key to ensuring more San Diegans aren’t left behind.”

Stanley Greene, 64, is one of these first-time homebuyers. After years of renting, he purchased his first home, a condo in Spring Valley, in 2025.

“For a long time, I didn’t think homeownership was something that would be possible for me,” Greene said. “Walking into my home and realizing it was truly mine was an incredible moment. It’s been a gamechanger for my peace of mind and my future.”

This milestone comes at a time when median home sale prices in the city sit at roughly $930,000 – a price out of reach for many San Diegans.

“San Diego’s housing market has shut the door on too many working families for too long,” said Ricardo Flores, Executive Director, LISC San Diego. Access Granted is about opening that door and making sure people have everything they need to walk through it with confidence.”

“Homeownership changes everything for families, for communities and for the next generation,” said Al Abdallah, President and CEO of the Urban League of San Diego County. “Our HUD-certified counselors work with every buyer before and after closing because getting the keys is just the beginning. For these families, buying a home means building a foundation for the future.”

Since launching in 2021, SDF has contributed $4 million to support home ownership for San Diegans through the Access Granted program. Additional funding has been received from U.S. Bank, San Diego Gas & Electric, BQuest Foundation, Wells Fargo and Cox Communications.
