May 19, 2026 – San Diego, CA – More children and families across San Diego County will gain access to early literacy and learning opportunities through $2 million in grants announced by the Dr. Seuss Foundation and San Diego Foundation.
The grants are made in collaboration through Dr. Seuss Foundation’s Bright Futures initiative and the Ready to Learn endowment at San Diego Foundation, funded by the Dr. Seuss Foundation. Grants will support organizations expanding programs that build early literacy, promote healthy development and prepare children for success in school and beyond.
This year’s grantees, who applied through a common application, play an important role in helping children, from infants to age 8, learn, grow and build a strong foundation for the future. A full list of the grantees can be found here.
“We believe every child should have access to the kind of early experiences that spark curiosity and build a foundation for lifelong learning,” said Katie Rast, Chief Executive Officer of the Dr. Seuss Foundation.
“We are delighted to invest in organizations that are deeply connected to their communities, thus helping to ensure that more families have access to strong support early in the lives of their children,” said Brian Schottlaender, Board Chair and President of the Dr. Seuss Foundation.
The funding is distributed through two programs:
- Ready to Learn: supporting children from birth to age 5, with a focus on early literacy, language development and learning
- Bright Futures: supporting children up to age 8, with an emphasis on school readiness, experiential learning and social-emotional development
Together, the Ready to Learn and Bright Futures programs are awarding $2 million in grants to organizations across San Diego County, with some organizations receiving up to $90,000 in combined support.
“Each organization is doing incredible work to support young children and families across our region,” said Pamela Gray Payton, Vice President, Chief Impact and Partnerships Officer at San Diego Foundation. “These grants will help to build strong reading skills and give children the support they need to thrive.”
That impact is reflected in the work of local partners across the region.
“Early learning experiences shape how children see themselves and what they believe is possible,” said Allison Ohle, Executive Director of DEEP. “They also give parents the tools and confidence to serve as their child’s first and best teacher, opening doors for families across our community.”
This work builds on a longstanding partnership between Dr. Seuss Foundation and San Diego Foundation, which has invested nearly $5 million in local organizations. In 2025, the Dr. Seuss Foundation established a $15 million endowment at San Diego Foundation to support early literacy efforts for years to come. In its first year, Ready to Learn supported more than 14,600 children up to age 5 across San Diego County.
