A Reimagined Summer School Experience

The San Diego Foundation and the San Diego Unified School District are excited to announce that, based on the amazing success of the Summer 2021 program, Level Up SD has been renewed for Summer 2022.

Level Up SD is a reimagined summer school experience, offering extraordinary academic and enrichment programming to San Diego Unified students.*

Approximately $14 million will be available to San Diego community-based, youth development and education-serving nonprofit organizations for summer programming.

  • The application opens in January 2022
  • The application closes at 12 p.m., February 18, 2022
  • Grant amounts may range from $25,000 to $500,000

Grant Guidelines

As the impact of the COVID-19 crisis continues to be felt and evidenced in learning outcomes and social-emotional health, funded enrichment activities will prioritize students most negatively impacted by the pandemic. Funded programs will accelerate student learning, and support knowledge and skills building while promoting a sense of belonging and well-being.

Funding is possible for programs that are executed from June 20, 2022, to August 19, 2022.

Summer Learning Matters

COVID-19 has profoundly impacted every single aspect of our lives. Students, our region’s children and youth, have been especially impacted by the disruption to in-person learning and programs for youth. And, despite the resilience they have demonstrated during the pandemic, the COVID-19 crisis has both highlighted and exacerbated the existing inequalities challenging young San Diegans.

Summertime has always been a unique opportunity to support the whole student experience. But not every student has access.

Research has historically demonstrated that unequal summertime opportunities contribute to poor academic and social-emotional outcomes for students who lack access to summertime programs. High-quality summer learning programs can accelerate learning, impart non-cognitive skills that impact academic achievement and nurture a sense of community and belonging.

This summer, there continues to be an increased need for responsive summertime learning environments, especially for those student groups most impacted by the pandemic.

In response, The San Diego Foundation is proud to work with the San Diego Unified School District and nonprofit organizations across San Diego County to bring our young people a summer of learning and joy.
