|The STEAM Leadership Series, sponsored by The San Diego Foundation and other local partners, will host an event, “16 & Me: Opportunities in Genomics Experience,” for 75 high school students from the San Diego Unified School District to learn about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) experiences from one of the world’s leading scientists. The event will teach San Diego youth how to build careers and jobs in San Diego’s innovation economy.
The event will feature a keynote speech from Dr. J. Craig Venter, one of the leading scientists of the 21st century who is known for his numerous contributions to genomic research. Dr. Venter will speak about his path to science from community college to the Presidential Medal of Science. President of the J. Craig Venter Institute Karen E. Nelson, a 2018 inductee to the National Academy of Sciences and an expert in the human microbiome, will also talk to students about her own path from Jamaica to La Jolla.
Following the keynote speeches, students will break off into small groups to explore interactive lab environments at the J. Craig Venter Institute.
