March 7, 2017 – San Diego, CA – Xavier Leonard has joined The San Diego Foundation as Director of the Malin Burnham Center for Civic Engagement (CCE).
CCE brings community together to learn and discuss social challenges and opportunities by facilitating partnerships and collaborative action to create a vibrant San Diego region. In 2016, CCE convened more than 4,000 meetings and events to influence positive community change.
Under Leonard’s leadership, CCE will champion sustainable change across San Diego communities while developing partnerships and measuring regional quality of life throughout San Diego County.
As the former Public Technology and Data Strategist for the City of San Diego Civic Innovation Lab, Leonard brings a wealth of expertise in facilitating cross-sector collaborations to improve the civic experience for San Diegans. He co-founded FAB LAB San Diego and also served as a Chairperson for the California Broadband Policy Network, where he advocated for inclusion of community-based organizations as beneficiaries of California’s Teleconnect Fund, and for policies that improve access to internet technologies and digital opportunities for underserved communities.
Leonard has spoken on the deployment of technology to empower and develop communities at the United Nations’ World Summit, and he has been honored as a Z-Fellow of the Zero Divide Foundation, an Ideas Institute Fellow of the MIT Media Lab, and a TEC Champion by the United States Congress.

On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
