September 11, 2017 – San Diego, CA – The San Diego Foundation today announced the availability of grant funding for partnering artists and nonprofits arts and culture organizations through the Creative Catalyst Program. Grants are available up to $20,000 for local professional artists to create new work or advance existing work in San Diego.
The San Diego Foundation Creative Catalyst Program strengthens San Diego’s creative economy by providing opportunities for local professional artists to create work that advances their careers, increases civic engagement and enriches quality of life. Artists are essential to the community-driven priorities identified in Our Greater San Diego Vision for how we work, enjoy, live and learn in the San Diego region. Since its inception, the Creative Catalyst Program has partnered with more than 30 arts and culture nonprofits and 35 artist fellows, reaching more than 170,000 community members.
“The San Diego Foundation believes that direct support to artists has a positive and measurable impact on the vitality and vibrancy of our neighborhoods and our lives,” expressed Katie Rast, Director of Community Impact at The San Diego Foundation. “For the 2018-2019 grant cycle, we are excited to announce a more open and extended application process to encourage a wider diversity of projects.”
Artists may choose any qualified, willing arts organization and pair independently with them to submit a joint application. Artists are no longer required to apply to pre-selected organizations. The deadline to submit a joint application is December 11, 2017 at 12:00pm.
For more information about the Creative Catalyst grant cycle, please review the grant guidelines here.
Additionally, The Foundation will be hosting an informational webinar on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 10:00am. Both artists and potential sponsoring organizations are encouraged to attend. Register here to attend.

On August 9, 2022, we awarded $838,704 in Opening the Outdoors grants to 24 nonprofit organizations that offer equitable access to outdoor spaces in San Diego County.
“San Diego Foundation is proud to once again support its partners committed to increasing community-driven efforts to enhance accessible outdoor space, encourage youth to learn more through hands-on education and create the next generation of environmental stewards in the San Diego region,” said Christiana DeBenedict, SDF Director of Environment Initiatives.
This year’s grantees will help address these inequities and enhance access to the outdoors throughout San Diego County.
