Aligning Philanthropy and Public Health to Improve Birth Outcomes

Too many San Diego mothers and babies face significant disparities in childbirth complications, pregnancy-related deaths and early or low-weight births.

These disparities are driven by gaps in access to high-quality prenatal and postpartum care and the economic pressures many families face during pregnancy.

Born Well brings together San Diego Foundation, local nonprofits and the County’s Maternal Child and Family Health Services Branch to invest in culturally responsive, community-based care, such as doulas, midwives and prenatal service providers rooted in the communities they serve, so every baby has a healthy start.

Developed with the County’s Perinatal Equity Initiative, Jewish Family Services and Neighborhood House Association, Born Well’s guaranteed income pilot program provides unrestricted cash support to a small group of high-risk expecting mothers to learn how financial stability affects pregnancy and birth outcomes.

Give Close to Home

San Diego is the home we all share. And when our neighbors need us, we show up. A gift to San Diego Foundation is how we take care of each other – one family, one neighborhood, one gift at a time.
