Annual Report

BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF OPPORTUNITY

The global events of the past year have challenged us in ways that we may have once considered unimaginable. Through these challenges, hearts have been touched, and important conversations have begun. Yet, some might say that these events have tested our resolve as a community.

In 2017, The San Diego Foundation experienced a coming together of our community even stronger than before. Many donors gave generously to those facing lack of opportunity, disaster, prejudice and violence.

These contributions enabled The San Diego community Foundation to provide support, necessary resources, a sense of optimism and a desire to work toward civility and peace locally, nationally and globally. This abundance of generosity is a constant reminder that we do have the resolve to make a positive difference, and that in the face of adversity compassion prevails.

Hundreds of donors gave more than $50 million in 2017 to accelerate change, disrupt the status quo, drive innovation and create opportunity. As philanthropists, we promote positive change through grantmaking, strategic partnerships and civic engagement that will improve the lives of those that make the San Diego region their home, as well as the quality of the region itself.

Today, in our connected world, charitable giving has an expanded and more complex meaning. More than ever before, philanthropy has the power to influence systemic change that can facilitate opportunity for diverse communities to live well and thrive.

The San Diego Foundation also addresses the years ahead through continued focus on our youth. From Oceanside to San Ysidro, La Jolla to Ramona, our children will play an integral role in shaping the vibrant future we imagine. Philanthropic investments made in them today, their education and overall wellbeing, will directly impact our ability to create age-friendly communities.

This 2017 Annual Report manifests gifts made to our community by a community of generous donors. The Board of Governors, Management, and Staff of The San Diego Foundation have great respect and appreciation for you.

Whether a collaborator, donor, volunteer, non-profit or recipient of Foundation support and services, we are most grateful for your engagement in your San Diego community - in whatever way you define community.

STORIES OF IMPACT

Helping San Diego Families

Helping San Diego Families

Every year, thousands of San Diego children fall further behind their peers because of gaps in the child health and welfare systems. Unless we address this challenge head-on, the opportunity gap for families in the region will only grow wider, impacting our economy, culture and overall growth in the region. The Strong Families, Thriving Communities partnership with San Diego County and The Clinton Health Matters Initiative will help address the systemic challenges of child-based systems negatively affecting local children and families in San Diego County.

Few things are more synonymous with San Diego as Balboa Park. Balboa Park is widely recognized as one of the most cherished destinations in the region. That’s why The San Diego Foundation joined forces with the City of San Diego and other philanthropists and committed $1 million to a new proposal that will increase access, enhance green space and improve safety at Balboa Park for residents and visitors alike.

The San Diego Foundation works with visionary donors who want to leave a legacy and invest in innovative projects that help all San Diegans. Patty Brutten is an example of such a philanthropist. Her giving helped create a new online tool that increases access to more than 1,100 parks in San Diego with the click of a button. The website, Get Outside San Diego, allows anyone to search in one central location to find the perfect park, preserve or open space for any activity.

The San Diego Foundation Creative Catalyst Program strengthens our creative economy by providing opportunities for artists to grow their careers and create works that increase civic engagement and enrich regional quality of life. Creative Catalyst fellow Michelle Montjoy’s community-driven art project in North County brought people from diverse backgrounds together to engage in a bigger conversation. Through her work, she demonstrated that art can go beyond inspiring an audience and connect deeper to our sense of community.

With limited educational resources and opportunities, local student Andrea Villanueva wasn’t always in a position to be a scientist. Today, that has changed. By creating more educational opportunities with internships and mentorships in STEM, The San Diego Foundation Science & Technology Program and San Diego Workforce Partnership are building a stronger future for Andrea and other youth aspiring to work in San Diego’s innovation economy.
