Annual Report

The global events of the past year have challenged us in ways that we may have once considered unimaginable. Through these challenges, hearts have been touched, and important conversations have begun. Yet, some might say that these events have tested our resolve as a community.

In 2017, The San Diego Foundation experienced a coming together of our community even stronger than before. Many donors gave generously to those facing lack of opportunity, disaster, prejudice and violence.

These contributions enabled The San Diego community Foundation to provide support, necessary resources, a sense of optimism and a desire to work toward civility and peace locally, nationally and globally. This abundance of generosity is a constant reminder that we do have the resolve to make a positive difference, and that in the face of adversity compassion prevails.

Hundreds of donors gave more than $50 million in 2017 to accelerate change, disrupt the status quo, drive innovation and create opportunity. As philanthropists, we promote positive change through grantmaking, strategic partnerships and civic engagement that will improve the lives of those that make the San Diego region their home, as well as the quality of the region itself.

Today, in our connected world, charitable giving has an expanded and more complex meaning. More than ever before, philanthropy has the power to influence systemic change that can facilitate opportunity for diverse communities to live well and thrive.

The San Diego Foundation also addresses the years ahead through continued focus on our youth. From Oceanside to San Ysidro, La Jolla to Ramona, our children will play an integral role in shaping the vibrant future we imagine. Philanthropic investments made in them today, their education and overall wellbeing, will directly impact our ability to create age-friendly communities.
