Charitable Giving is at a Record High. Here’s Where We’re Donating Our Money

Charitable giving surged to a record high in 2017 as Americans gave more than $400 billion for the first time ever to a wide variety of organizations, according to a new report released Tuesday. Giving jumped 5.2 percent from last year to an estimated $410.02 billion in 2017, according to Giving USA 2018, the Giving USA Foundation’s annual report on philanthropy.

The Giving Pledge announced that 14 more philanthropists joined its ranks in the last year, committing to donate more than half of their wealth to charitable causes. The newest signatories hail from Canada, India, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. To date, 183 individuals from 22 countries have signed the pledge.

The global impact investing market is growing and becoming more diverse, with both impact and financial returns in line with investors’ expectations, a new report finds. “The Annual Survey demonstrates there is significant momentum in the market and provides data and insights for investors to maximize their impact and ultimately tackle critical global issues such as access to education and health care, gender inequality, poverty, climate change, and more.”
