giveBIG Event will Benefit Local Nonprofits

March 11, 2014 – San Diego, CA – The San Diego Foundation is pleased to announce the return of giveBIG, a 24-hour online event to increase philanthropy in San Diego. giveBIG 2014 will take place on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 from midnight – 11:59 p.m. PST.

Every dollar donated through giveBIG on May 6 will go further because of the incentive pool that has been created by The San Diego Foundation and its sponsors. In conjunction with U.S. Bank and the Waitt Foundation, The San Diego Foundation has pooled $150,000 to incentivize giving during this event, so that nonprofits will receive a proportion of this pool based on how much money they raise during the event. For example, if an organization raises 5% of the total amount raised during the event, they will receive 5% of the incentive pool.

giveBIG is occurring in conjunction with Give Local America (www.GiveLocalAmerica.org), a national day-of-giving event also on May 6 that will further incentivize local giving.

Launched in December 2011, The San Diego Foundation hosted its first giveBIG event, and helped 315 local nonprofits raise $2,109,640 in just 36-hours. These results doubled expectations, with 6,174 donations from nearly 3,000 donors. Notably, nearly 750 (25%) of donors reported being first time contributors to their respective nonprofits. Some of the nonprofits who generated the most donations in 2011 include: La Jolla Music Society, High Tech High Foundation, YMCA of San Diego County, Voices for Children, and San Diego Food Bank Corporation.

The day is not only a great fundraising tool, but a wonderful chance for nearly 350 nonprofits enrolled in The Foundation’s BetterGiving program to reach new donors and create new relationships. San Diego 6, San Diego Magazine and Jazz 88.3 have partnered with The San Diego Foundation to help raise awareness in the community about the special day-of-giving.

In order to participate, nonprofits must have a published BetterGiving portrait, a tool that provides in-depth information on hundreds of local nonprofits. Its main objective is to help donors and the community better understand strengths and needs of nonprofit organizations, connecting donors with organizations they care about most and serving as a seal of approval from The Foundation’s staff.

Sally Costello, executive director of Escondido Humane society stated that “the Escondido Humane Society was thrilled to join the nonprofit community across San Diego on this campaign and grateful to the 125 donors who chose to give to the Escondido Humane Society. This effort gave us a new avenue to share our stories and connect with animal lovers in our community. We appreciate the opportunity to participate in this year’s event and are looking forward to it.”

Bob Kelly, president and CEO of The San Diego Foundation, explained that giveBIG enables The Foundation to leverage its BetterGiving program to benefit the nonprofit community. “BetterGiving allows The San Diego Foundation to broadly share knowledge about local nonprofits’ needs and the vital services they provide in the San Diego region,” said Kelly. “Our goal has been to make philanthropy accessible, fun and easy for the entire San Diego community. And, you can give any day, every day at any time of day through this website.”

The giveBIG event is open to the public and all are encouraged to visit sdfoundation.org/giveBIG to access more information on the giveBIG pre-event pages. Anyone who wishes to participate will be able to make a secure donation to the affiliated charity of their choice by debit or credit card on May 6 via the giveBIG website. The San Diego Foundation, which administers the BetterGiving website, takes no fees and supports the giveBIG event as a community service at no additional charge.
