"The Literature Tile Project"The Challenge: English language learners in the 1st, 3rd and 5th grades not only needed help with literacy skills, but had the additional challenges of coming from economically disadvantaged families. 25% were English language learners and 40% participated in the lunch program. All too often, school literature assignments take the form of a book report or discussion. These are beneficial admirable learning tools, but Ms. Caliger wanted her students to be more actively involved in the learning process, using student-created art. The Solution: In this paired reading program, students were asked to read and respond to a favorite part of a book or a meaningful writing by painting their thoughts on ceramic tiles. This creative depiction provided a way for the children to incorporate a new medium into their literacy expression. It helped them make a direct connection between classroom literature and the visual appeal of the tile art they created. It also became apparent that students received a secondary value-pride of ownership. Once the ceramic tiles were permanently displayed on the outside walls of the classrooms, many conversations about the meaning of the tiles took place between students and the school staff. Accomplishments: Student enthusiasm was high when they completed the project and their love of reading enhanced. Equally important, a sense of community within the school was fostered. The entire student body and staff delighted in watching the transformation of cold, cement walls turn into a brilliant display of mosaic tile art. The project was replicated by the 1st and 3rd grades. Ms. Caliger plans to continue the Literacy Tile Art program for several years to come by adding to the already beautiful walls.
