BACKGROUND Throughout his life, Major Reuben H. Fleet was known as a pioneer and unabashed patriot, who believed in basic virtues such as personal integrity, self-reliance, devotion to duty, love of country, and respect for truth. Major Fleet has become a legendary San Diego aviation figure. His first plane ride – in a rickety single prop taking off from North Island in 1917 – forever changed the course of San Diego. A few years later, Major Fleet moved his fledgling Consolidated Aircraft Corp. here from Buffalo, New York. It later became the successful Convair Division of General Dynamics. Major Fleet’s business accomplishments could be attributed to his talent for developing unconventional approaches to problems that would engulf lesser businessmen. Major Fleet held fast to a motto: “Nothing short of right is right.” Those words still guide the ongoing work of the Reuben H. Fleet Memorial Scholarship Fund as it provides scholarships in the field of science, engineering, and mathematics.
