ALBERT W. & MILDRED HUBBARD SCHOLARSHIP
Al Hubbard spent most of his formative years in foster homes in the early part of the 20th Century, experiencing many of the problems associated with that environment. The result of those problems left him with few options, the best being to join the Navy. In the Navy, Al found a home and a life he loved. As a result of a permanent disability sustained on active duty, Al received a medical discharge from the Navy.

In 1939, Al arrived in Escondido with Mildred, his bride, and began working at a menial job. Over a period of time, through hard work, Al was able to acquire various businesses in Escondido. Good fortune shined upon the Hubbard's and they accumulated a significant estate.

While Al never complained about the loss of his Naval career or the disability he sustained, he did have regrets that he had not gotten an education. His attitude was "I made my money in Escondido and want to leave it in Escondido." It was his decision to leave the major portion of his estate to provide college scholarships for the youth of Escondido and Valley Center who "could not go to college without my help."

The Albert W. and Mildred Hubbard Scholarship is open to:

  • Graduating seniors attending high school in Escondido or Valley Center, residents of Escondido or Valley Center already attending college, or students currently attending the San Pasqual Academy in Escondido, CA who plan to attend an accredited two-year college or four-year university in the United States
  • Have a minimum 2.50 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Be residents of Escondido, CA or Valley Center, CA
  • Have a demonstrated financial need

This scholarship may be renewable for up to four years provided the student maintains a positive academic standard (minimum 2.50 GPA on a 4.0 scale) and good citizenship record and has a financial need. Award amounts will be evaluated and determined annually. This scholarship may be used for tuition, books and fees.

ARREOLA/CBSPM SCHOLARSHIP
The Honorable Rafael Arreola has a long history of assisting others and of making an effort to improve the communities in which he lives. Born and raised by his mother and grandmother in a small village in Mexico, he was brought to live in the barrio on the east side of Riverside, CA at age 13. During his teen years in the barrio, Judge Arreola organized groups to clean up yards, paint and repair dilapidated houses, and make other improvements to the neighborhood. He saw firsthand the need for assistance. Now, as a community service, he develops and manages low-income housing projects for seniors, the disabled, and the homeless.

After high school, Judge Arreola received two scholarships that inspired him to go to college and become an engineer. He first worked as an engineering aide, then a land surveyor, then assistant civil engineer.  Eventually, he became an attorney, and finally, a judge. Today he is retired and serves as an assigned Judge of the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego.

Judge Arreola established the Arreola/CBSPM Scholarship to assist deserving students. He hopes to continue giving back to the community as his way of saying thank you for all the help he has received throughout his life.

  • Graduating seniors from Sweetwater Union High School District who plan to attend an accredited four-year university, two-year college, or licensed trade/vocational school in the United States
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Have a demonstrated financial need
  • Have a strong commitment to their community as demonstrated by their involvement in extra-curricular/church activities, or work/volunteer experience

Preference will be given to students who are ambitious, have shown success and potential in the courses related to their chosen career, and have persevered in spite of their obstacles.

This scholarship may be renewable provided the recipient maintains a positive academic (minimum 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale) and citizenship record while in school. This scholarship may be used for tuition, books and fees.

BRESLAUER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
Martin Breslauer, who established this scholarship, worked in city management with the City of San Diego for 30 years. He is one of six children whose parents never attended college but emphasized the importance of education. As a result, all but one of the children attended college, and some earned advanced degrees. It was therefore natural when the Breslauer Family Scholarship was established that it would focus on providing college scholarships for students who did not have the advantages Mr. Breslauer's parents provided their children.

The San Diego Foundation was recommended to Mr. Breslauer when he was having his will prepared. "The selection of The Foundation has been very gratifying to me," he says. "Although the fund may be smaller than many, it shows that individuals with fewer resources can still do some good for the community. The Foundation is a wonderful way to contribute since such a high proportion goes to the charity you select." San Diego High School was selected as the focus for the scholarship. "It is my hope that recipients will come back after their education and contribute to the community," he says.

The Breslauer Family Scholarship is open to:

  • Graduating seniors from San Diego High School (in downtown San Diego only), who plan to attend an accredited four-year university in the United States
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Have a demonstrated financial need

In this couple’s words, “we have enjoyed the beauty and goodness of San Diego for many years and now seek to return some of the benefits of our careers to our community. We established this scholarship to provide direct and significant opportunities and help to those for whom life has not been so kind.” The purpose of the Daddy Longlegs Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to young adults who are or have been through the foster care system. FRANK H. AULT SCHOLARSHIP
Frank Ault’s 37-year career started at San Diego Gas & Electric in 1969.  His career was spent in accounting and auditing, his last 20 years as Senior Vice President & Controller for SDG&E and Sempra Energy, which was created in 1998, as the parent company when SDG&E and Southern California Gas Co. merged.

The scholarship was established by Frank, his co-workers and Sempra Energy in 2005 to support college students majoring in accounting and finance.  He believes that talented professionals are needed to manage and lead the businesses of tomorrow.

His philosophy is that success comes from hard work and working through others.  One must : 1) be willing to make decisions when all facts are not known, thinking through all possible outcomes before acting; 2)  understand the viewpoint of others to achieve a win-win situation that benefits everybody: 3)  be objective and honest; and 4) act with integrity.  As a leader, your primary responsibility is to provide guidance and remove roadblocks so others can get their job done.   Let the spotlight shine on others because the light will reflect well on you.

Frank is passionate about volunteering and making our community a better place to live, work and play.  “I believe in putting back into the community and assisting others," says Frank.  He began his community service in 1961 as a volunteer firefighter in Palm Desert, CA.  He served on the Board of Directors of The San Diego Foundation from 1986-2003, including a two-year term as Board Chairman and two-year term as chairman of The Foundation’s Community Scholarship Program . In addition, after 47 years he continues to serve as a volunteer firefighter and chairs the San Diego Fire Foundation which raises funds for the 27 fire departments in San Diego County that have volunteer firefighters.

REUBEN H. FLEET MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Major Fleet has become a legendary San Diego aviation figure. His first plane ride – in a rickety single prop taking off from North Island in 1917 – forever changed the course of San Diego. A few years later, Major Fleet moved his fledgling Consolidated Aircraft Corp. here from Buffalo. It later became the successful Convair Division of General Dynamics. Major Fleet’s business accomplishments could be attributed to his talent for developing unconventional approaches to problems that would engulf lesser businessmen.

THE SAN DIEGO FOUNDATION COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIP FOR MATH & SCIENCE
A recently published 10-year analysis showed declines in affordability and access to college for most Americans. The report concluded that, over the long run, no state had increased financial-aid spending enough to keep pace with tuition ("Measuring Up 2004," National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education. San Jose, CA). In response to this need, The Science & Technology Working Group of The San Diego Foundation established the Community College Mathematics and Science Scholarship. This program reflects the mission of the Working Group efforts to improve mathematics and science education in the San Diego region.

Although many scholarships exist, few are oriented toward mathematics and science. Even fewer are explicitly targeted to Community College students transferring to four-year universities. Yet the eight San Diego Community Colleges are a huge feeder source of diverse, first-generation college, and low-income students. This program partners with individuals, donors and companies to provide scholarships to encourage, and support, community college students who are obtaining their baccalaureate in mathematics and science.

The San Diego Foundation Community College Transfer Scholarship for Math & Science is o pen to:

  • San Diego Community College students who will transfer to an accredited four-year university in the United States

VINCENT TROTTER HEALTH CARE SCHOLARSHIP
Joan Jones established this scholarship to honor her father, Vincent Trotter. Joan is so proud of him and believes she is most fortunate to have a father like him who has inspired her in so many ways.

Vincent Trotter was born in Munising, Michigan in 1926. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served his country as Acting First Sergeant in the 77 th Ordnance Unit serving in the Asian theatre in World War II.

Raised on a diary farm, he was the first in his family to go to college. He graduated from Marquette University, majoring in accounting. After marrying Grace Roeder, they decided to pursue their life and dreams in California. This is the story of her father’s life. He was always making things happen and making a difference.

Vincent was the Vice President and Controller of West Foods, before retiring and starting his own accounting and tax business which he managed for over 25 years. Vincent had more energy than a man half his age! He was constantly busy and always had a kind word to say about everyone. He enjoyed bowling, traveling, hunting and going to the casino. He was an avid black jack player, participating in many tournaments. But, most of all, he devoted himself to his family, especially to his wife of 53 years, after she suffered a stroke.

What was the secret to Vincent’s success and happiness? He loved people, had a positive attitude and never took things too seriously. Unfortunately, cancer took his life in February 2007. Before he died, Joan mentioned establishing a scholarship in his name. A big smile came to his face when they talked about the opportunity this scholarship could give someone.

Joan wishes everyone could have the type of father she had! If you apply for this scholarship you must demonstrate the kind of attitude her dad had: a “can do” attitude and a belief that you can make a difference.

Because of her father’s experience with doctors, nurses, home health care providers, and hospice care workers during his battle with cancer, Joan decided this scholarship would be for students pursuing a career in the health care field.

The Vincent Trotter Health Care Scholarship is open to:

  • Graduating high school seniors or adult re-entry students pursuing a career in the health care field (nurse, doctor, health care aid, or medical researcher) who plan to attend an accredited four-year university, two-year college, or licensed trade/vocational school in the United States
  • Have a minimum 2.50 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale
  • Past recipients may re-apply and will compete with all other applicants.

This scholarship may be used for tuition, books and fees.
