RECESSION PUTS ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION IN JEOPARDY
The San Diego Foundation Calls Upon Community Members To Help Provide Scholarships for Thousands of Applicants

February 2, 2009- The economic recession is felt by everyone, including thousands of students who want to attend college but may not be given the chance. As the university system reels from statewide education cuts and parents face lost savings and declining home values, the opportunity for higher education is slipping away for many prospective students.

This year’s Community Scholarship Program season at The San Diego Foundation reflects the emerging need. With more requests expected, The Foundation has received more than 1,000 scholarship applications so far, indicating the final number could well surpass last year’s total of nearly 1,200 applications. Students express a growing number of financial hardships resulting from the struggling economy. Current funding will not meet this record-breaking number.
