Lemon Grove Education Foundation Creates New Scholarship Endowment
at The San Diego Foundation
Local scholarship program exceeds fund-raising goals, students
gain single-application process to multiple scholarship programs
LEMON GROVE, CA – January 7, 2004 – The Lemon Grove
Education Foundation today announced that it has established a new
community-based scholarship endowment for Lemon Grove residents.
The fund will be managed by The San Diego Foundation.
This scholarship endowment is open to all residents in the Lemon
Grove School District and will provide funds in perpetuity for people
to improve their lives through educational opportunities.
The Lemon Grove Education Foundation exceeded its funding goal
by raising over $137,300 to create its scholarship endowment. Included
in this total is $15,000 that the Lemon Grove Foundation has already
granted in scholarships to 16 individuals over the past two years.
Mary England, volunteer and president of the Lemon Grove Education
Foundation, said.
“Through this endowment, individuals in our community can
apply for educational scholarships endlessly as the endowment’s
principal of $122,300 will never be disbursed. Only the interest
off the principal is used to fund the scholarships.”
England said, “With our endowment created, we are dissolving
our own foundation and have commissioned The San Diego Foundation
to professionally manage the endowment, administrate the scholarships,
and handle the day-to-day activities involved with the endowment.”
She added, “Another distinct advantage of working with The
San Diego Foundation is that Lemon Grove individuals can not only
apply for our scholarship, but with a single application can reach
the many other scholarships housed at The San Diego Foundation.”
England said, “We thank our many supporters throughout the
Lemon Grove community whose dedication and generosity provided the
financial footing needed to establish our scholarship endowment
fund.”
“The Lemon Grove Foundation began its quest to create an
educational endowment in 1999. We raised funds primarily through
our annual charity golf tournament, ‘Tee It Up for Education.’
The EDCO Disposal Corporation provided underwriting for the event
and was joined later by other Lemon Grove businesses who partnered
with us to create lasting educational opportunities for our community.”
