October 22, 2007 – In preparation for the immense recovery and rebuilding efforts our community will face, The San Diego Foundation today opened the After-the-Fires Fund for fire relief donations. As in the 2003 fire relief, this fund will support first-response efforts, but the primary focus will be ongoing recovery and rebuilding throughout the San Diego region. The San Diego Foundation has activated the San Diego Regional Disaster Fund (SDRDF), which is a supporting organization designed to provide leadership in the philanthropic response to regional disasters. The SDRDF played a major role in The San Diego Foundation’s fire relief efforts in the years following the 2003 fires.
The San Diego Foundation strongly encourages donors to support the first-responders like the San Diego/Imperial Counties American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. The After-the-Fires Fund will support these organizations immediately as well as funding recovery and rebuilding efforts in the days and weeks to come.
Donations to the After-the-Fires Fund/Respond, Recover, Rebuild, can be made online at www.sdfoundation.org or by calling (619) 235-2300.
Once the fires have passed, our community will face immense needs in every area of life starting with food, shelter and clothing and extending to social services, ongoing health care, environmental concerns, animal welfare, even scholarships for students in fire-affected families, and needs yet to emerge. The After-the-Fires Fund will support the community throughout the recovery and rebuilding phases.
As in 2003, where The San Diego Foundation can be of most help to our community is in the period immediately following the devastation and for years afterwards as the rebuilding continues.
Donations to the After-the-Fires Fund/Respond, Recover, Rebuild, can be made online at www.sdfoundation.org or by calling (619) 235-2300. If you would like to review what The San Diego Foundation accomplished through grantmaking and recovery and rebuilding after the 2003 fires, click here, or you can visit
www.sdfoundation.org and click on the After-the-Fire Fund box to view the report. Donors may specify which local fire they wish their donations to support, or contributions can be made for general and ongoing relief. All funds will be distributed within San Diego County only for fire-related relief.
The After-the-Fires Fund/Respond, Recover, Rebuild is an initiative of the San Diego Regional Disaster Fund - an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation - which was established to prepare for regional crises as well as to make grants to nonprofit organizations that provide relief to the San Diego region during and after a disaster. The San Diego Regional Disaster Fund does not grant directly to individuals or families, but to the nonprofit organizations that serve individuals and families.
